Solar Firms Look to Shed Their Gloom

Solar Firms Look to Shed Their Gloom - WSJ.com: "BY CASSANDRA SWEET

With the bankruptcy and federal probe last month of California solar-panel maker Solyndra Inc. and the free-fall of solar-company stocks over the past several weeks, the view of the global solar-power market may look dim or even grim. But is it?

Solar-power equipment manufacturers, solar-power project developers, dealers, suppliers and other players in the global solar-power market will meet in Dallas this week at Solar Power International, the largest annual U.S. gathering of the global solar-power industry. Solar-panel manufacturers, who have struggled against soft demand and falling prices, are likely to seek out suppliers eager to make deals.

Investors are looking for clues about demand and where to expect pockets of new growth as Europe, the industry's primary market over the last few years, fades.

The conference, which has almost exclusively been held in California in years past, is a convenient way to meet up with lenders, attorneys, utilities and other developers and technology providers who will all be in the same place, said Kevin Smith, chief executive of solar-power developer Solar Reserve.
